Auray stood before the giant bay doors of Colony X-10, not knowing what was waiting for him on the other side.
That woman knew my name... was all that Auray could think. He would get his answer soon, as the doors began to swing open slowly. Bright lights flooded the dim docking bay, casting growing shadows as the doors open further. Auray’s eyes adjusted quickly, first only seeing the woman as if the man standing next to her was blocked from his view. As his vision focused in, the woman wore the same cheerful smile she had before on the com-screen, but as his focus turned towards the man beside her, he wore a different kind of smile. A familiar smile.
Dmitri watched as the last of the drones passed through the barrier surrounding Earth. If he’d had anything left to fire at them, he would. Unfortunately his MS was dry and beginning to show signs it might collapse under its own weight. He had Agonotheta Letum walk the way back to the castle’s hanger. It had been a long day, as most Sundays had become.
They’re not gonna get any shorter, he thought, knowing what kind of trouble the ESUG President’s orders were going to be. NO ONE will be happy with this course of action.
...or in-action.
As Spera, Talex, and Solidus Epsilon exited the massive ark of a spaceship, Razel began to direct the two to what their next course of action should be.
“I’ll head down and get everyone on the same page, starting with the Queen, naturally,” he started saying over com-screen, “Ramsi, take the ‘OG’ NPL and get it to Solaris One. If Hal’s calculations are right, and they usually are, they’re gonna need that as soon as possible. After you drop that off, contact Culas and get him caught-up. Hal...”
He turned to the com-screen with Hal staring back at him. There was something between Hal and Razel that couldn’t be cured with words. They tried to talk about it throughout the five plus months they had been on the Yggdrasil, but neither of them knew how to deal with the situation they were in. Until they knew who the baby’s father was, nothing more could be discussed.
“Go get Natalya...” was all Razel could get out. Hal nodded and took off immediately, followed by Ramsi in the opposite direction.
Razel gazed upon Earth for a moment, taking it all in.
It’s so quiet... Razel thought as he twisted Spera around and blasted straight down to Earth.
Trent twisted Prophet of Sorrow around to dodge a drone retreating at top speed. He had been trying to grab one for the past ten minutes, and there were not many in the sky left close enough to get a chance.
Damnit!
In one last attempt, Trent fired Prophet’s chest cavity extending arm towards a fleeing drone. By chance alone, the arm latched onto the drones lower body. Trent’s eyes widened as the drone continued to soar up into the sky, higher and higher, with him in tow. The barrier was getting closer, and Trent knew this would only end in one of two ways. Either he’ll pass right through, or he’ll die. Trent closed his eyes, preparing for the worst. Only a couple seconds went by, but for Trent it felt like an infinite amount of time.
“Trent!” he heard a familiar voice call out from the com-screen. He slowly opened his eyes to see a frantic Razel, now shouting his name. He looked up to see Spera in the distance passing through the barrier. Trent made a split second decision and reeled-in the extending arm, tearing the drone apart and causing a small explosion.
“What the hell were you doing?” Razel asked Trent as their two MS’s hovered near each other.
“I...ah...have you seen Hiro?” Trent said, the exhaustion showing in his face. His brow was full of sweat and he looked like he hadn’t slept in days, Razel noted.
“No,,,” Razel said weakly, uncommon of him, “...but I have information about our attackers and how we can fight back.”
Culas floated in space above Solaris One, watching from afar as the inhabitants, mostly scientists and staff, evacuate from the self sustaining station. Gundam Valen’s sensors suddenly began to ping, alerting Culas that a mobile unit was in the vicinity. Upon closer inspection, Culas was surprised to see Talex. Just then, his com-screen came to life, Ramsi staring at him blankly, “Sir.”
Culas couldn’t hold back the smile that formed on his face, especially now seeing the original NPL that Talex was carrying on its back.
Ramsi flew straight into the docking bay where workers were already waiting, by order of Culas, ready to re-establish the NPL into the Solaris One’s heat shielding system. Ramsi jumped out of Talex, Pax Mechanics already swarming around his MS to refuel and arm. As he landed softly on the ground, Culas walked up to him briskly. Culas saluted, as he would any other time. Culas wraps his arms around Ramsi in a hug and squeezes. Ramsi, one arm down and one saluting, continued to salute, but let a smile grace his face.
Culas lets go and takes a step back from Ramsi, “very good to see you, Lance Corporal. I’ll make sure you are promoted for your good work.” Culas stands at attention and salutes Ramsi back, his face now as serious as stone. He had a damn lot of respect for this guy,
“Now, what else did you bring me?”
Lord Kraeos walked proudly through the corridors heading to the prisoner cells, his thunderous footsteps alerting the prisoners of his presence. He was feared in this part of Yggdrasil as the tormentor, the only Veluka that was allowed to lay a hand on the prisoners. Even the guards were not allowed to cause any harm to them, and were instead trained to be kind. This was all the way of the Veluka, ever since Kraeos was a little boy, this was how his people were taught to treat prisoners.
“Always give them hope, my son,” Kraeos could hear his father say, “for then they will suffer not only physically and mentally, but also spiritually.”
Kraeos continued to walk down the corridor, now passing cells holding cowering inmates. Some would scream in fear, their minds twisted long ago by their solitude. They were thin, not necessarily unhealthy, but they did give off a sickly or just weak presence.
Finally Lord Kraeos reached the cell he was venturing to, looking in and seeing Hiro lying on the metal floor, shivering. Kraeos opened the large iron door with one of his tree-trunk sized arms, something Hiro wouldn’t have been able to do at his full strength. Lord Kraeos knelt down on one knee and reached out to grab Hiro by his neck. Before he could, Hiro swung his arm with all the force he could muster, forcing his fingers in and around Kraeos’s right eye and squeezing it like a ripe fruit before pulling it straight out of its socket. Hiro immediately tried to run, but as he thought Kraeos would be too busy reeling in pain, he was wrong. Lord Kraoes calmly grabs up Hiro with one hand around his neck, his vacant right eye bleeding profusely, a stone-cold stare of silent rage upon his face. He began to squeeze, just enough and just long enough for Hiro to pass out cold.
Lord Kraeos wiped the blood from his face with the rag Hiro was laying on, dropping it back on the floor for the next occupant. He then grabbed Hiro with one hand and swung him over his shoulder like a fresh kill. Without a word, without a thought, Lord Kraeos walked out of the cell and down the corridor towards his destination.
After quite a bit of time, Natalya finally had made it to her quarters inside the Pax Pacis Headquarters on Colony L7, She sat on her bed, rubbing her stomach lovingly. She thought of Hal, the things she knew now, the letters from a cloaked man she had received over the past six months. There were three now, and as she stared at the desk where she kept them, she repeated in her head, each one, verbatim.
The last letter she received informed her that her baby would be coming two months early. She was just about reaching month 7 and she was worried. No matter how much the doctor comforted her by telling and showing her how healthy her and the baby were, she still knew the letter was telling the truth. It had to, because the second letter said that Hal would survive unscathed, and she had to believe that was the truth.
Just then, the door slid open, she could hear heavy breathing, figuring it was Emma back from playing her games. She turned slowly to see Hal standing at the doorway, out of breathe. He walked towards her and grabbed her and brought her close. She began to cry, soft ‘thank yous’ separating her lips. They held each other for a moment, enjoying the feeling as long as they could.
Natalya’s body shook as she pulled away from Hal, her complexion turning pale.
It’s time.
Auray stood there, staring at Pavidus. He was wearing a khaki long jacket, with white fur around the neck. Underneath the jacket looked to be some kind of robes Auray couldn’t place. The robes the woman wore seemed similar.
Pavidus remained smiling, walking towards Auray with his personal stride and hands behind him.
“Hello, Auray,” he said, his voice cutting deep at Auray’s core, “we have much to discuss.” Pavidus’s smile vanished and his face became grim. He looked at the woman, smiling once, and then continued walking forward into the docking bay.
Auray still couldn’t move. The woman looked in his direction, “you should probably follow him.”
Auray started into a bit of a trot, hurriedly catching up with Pavidus. While behind, he comed Akujin and Xiefall.
“Stand down, guys,” Auray said, still kinda in shock, “we found him.”
“Found who, Au...” Xiefall started, but then realized and stopped.
“The woman will facilitate the needs of the colony, work with her until i get back. Pavidus and I need to have a chat.”
The people of Earth slowly came out of their homes, or the shelters they were staying in throughout the attack. Even though the all clear was given, then still looked to the sky and moved quickly. It was time to clean the debri from the battle, Drone wreckage scattered about the world. What else could they do but go about their lives?
As the people started to do their work, every com-screen, vid-screen, and mobile coms came to life. Lord Kraeos, doned with an eyepatch over his right eye, stood stone faced. He said nothing at first, but after bringing Hiro into frame, holding him by his neck. He said one thing, “You’re world is mine.”
Hiro’s neck snapped like a twig, blood and bone shooting from the flesh. His body became rigid and then immediately limp, falling to the ground. With that, Lord Kraeos disappeared, leaving only the image of a fourteen year old boy, dead and bloodied.
